JAMES ADKINS OF MARKET HARBOROUGH SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENSES AND PORNOGRAPHY

In August 2005, a significant legal development occurred involving James Adkins, a man from Farndale View, Market Harborough, who was previously convicted of serious sexual offenses against minors. Adkins, who was at the time 31 years old, had been sentenced to a three-year prison term at Leicester Crown Court in March after a jury found him guilty of three counts of indecent assault. The assaults involved two teenage girls, with the first incident dating back nearly a decade and the second occurring several years later. In addition to the assault charges, Adkins had pleaded guilty to possessing and distributing ten pornographic images of children on his personal computer. These images had been downloaded from a website, stored in a folder accessible to other website members for four days, which facilitated the sharing of illicit material.

Following his conviction, Adkins was also permanently barred from working with children and was placed on the sex offenders' register for life, reflecting the severity of his crimes and the potential risk he posed to minors. In a notable legal challenge, Adkins appealed the three-year sentence handed down for the indecent assaults to the Court of Appeal in London. The court decided to reduce the sentence to two-and-a-half years, citing that the original sentence did not sufficiently account for Adkins's age at the time of his first offense. Earlier in 2005, in a separate but related case, Adkins was also convicted of targeting young girls in his role as the director of the Market Harborough Youth Theatre. Despite denying three counts of indecent assault, he was found guilty and sentenced to three years in prison. Additionally, he received a three-month sentence for possessing indecent images of children. The court revealed that Adkins had been observed cuddling a 14-year-old girl during a theatre show in 1994, despite being warned off by an adult. His inappropriate behavior persisted over the years, including an incident where he assaulted another girl after casting her in a leading role in a play. His actions led to a lifetime ban from working with anyone under 16 and the indefinite inclusion on the sex offenders' register, underscoring the gravity of his misconduct and the ongoing threat he posed to minors.
