IAN SLUGGATT FROM WHESTONE AND LEICESTER JAILED FOR ONLINE GROOMING AND SEXUAL ABUSE

In December 2013, Ian Sluggett, a 40-year-old man residing in Whetstone, Leicester, was sentenced to a decade behind bars after being convicted of a series of serious crimes related to online grooming and sexual abuse of minors. The court heard that Sluggett had engaged in a calculated scheme to exploit teenage girls through social media platforms, posing as a young pop star to lure his victims into a trap of manipulation and sexual exploitation.

Sluggatt, who previously lived on Browns Way in Whetstone, admitted to a total of 23 charges, including the creation and distribution of indecent photographs of children, meeting minors following grooming efforts, and engaging in sexual activities with underage girls. His actions spanned a period during which he used the internet to target vulnerable young individuals, many of whom were from the Melton and Rutland areas.

According to police reports, Sluggett downloaded images of a little-known American pop singer and used these images to conceal his true identity on multiple Facebook accounts. Under false names, he befriended hundreds of young girls, most aged between 13 and 16. As the grooming progressed, he sent some of these victims indecent images of himself and coerced others into sending explicit photographs of themselves. His tactics involved escalating demands for more explicit content, often threatening to publish previously sent images online if his victims refused.

The criminal activities were uncovered after a teacher overheard a conversation between two pupils, during which one girl revealed she was being pressured to send indecent images to Sluggett. This tip-off led to a police investigation that uncovered the extent of his online predation.

Leicester Crown Court was told that Sluggett had also met some of his victims in person, engaging in sexual activities with certain individuals. The investigation revealed a disturbing pattern of grooming, coercion, and abuse that spanned both online and offline interactions.

Detective Inspector Richard Hiom, of Leicestershire Police’s child sexual exploitation team, commented on the case, emphasizing the dangers posed by social media and the internet. He stated, “This case is very sad as it raises a number of issues around the use of social media and the internet. Young people need to understand that there are people who will lie on social media sites to satisfy their own sexual needs.”

He further advised parents and guardians to be vigilant, recommending that children only accept online friendships from individuals they have previously met in person. He warned against sharing personal information or explicit images online, noting that once such content is posted, it is virtually impossible to remove it entirely. The officer also urged parents to monitor their children’s internet use, suggesting that devices capable of internet access should be kept in common areas of the home, and that parents should be aware of who their children are communicating with both online and offline.

Leicestershire County Council’s social services collaborated with police during the investigation, providing support to victims and their families. Ivan Ould, the council’s cabinet member for children and young people, expressed relief at the conviction, stating, “Online exploitation is a serious offence and we’re pleased that a conviction has been secured. We took immediate action to ensure that any vulnerable young people were safe and have offered ongoing support to their families, whilst working closely with the police to help find victims.”

In addition to his prison sentence, Sluggett was issued a 15-year Sexual Offences Prevention Order. This legal restriction prohibits him from having unsupervised contact with children and requires him to grant police access to any electronic devices he uses upon release. The order aims to prevent further offenses and protect potential future victims.

During the court proceedings, Sluggett admitted to multiple crimes, including ten counts of making indecent photographs of a child, one count of distributing such images, two counts of meeting a child following grooming, and one count of attempting to meet a child after grooming. He also pleaded guilty to engaging in sexual activity with a minor, causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual acts, and attempting to do so on several occasions. His actions have left a lasting impact on the victims and serve as a stark reminder of the dangers lurking online for young people.
