BATLEY MAN THREATENED TO KILL SISTER OVER MENTAL HEALTH CONCERNS
A man flew into a rage and threatened to kill his sister when she expressed concern over his declining mental health.Hitesh Patel attempted to seize a knife during an argument at the family home in Batley but was halted by his brother.
The victim highlighted that reporting the incident to the police has caused significant difficulties within their community, as involving authorities is considered 'taboo' due to cultural norms.
She stated: "Within the culture it is not acceptable to involve police in domestic situations." She added that mental health issues are also a taboo topic within their community due to a lack of understanding.
The woman reported that since the incident, she has struggled with sleep and concentration at work.
She believes her brother's health problems are linked to his misuse of drugs and alcohol.
She said: "There's the constant worry that he may follow up on the threats he made.
He has changed from a loving and caring person to somebody who is aggressive, volatile and paranoid." The victim blocked Patel from calling her or contacting her via social media because of repeated threats against her and her husband.
Magistrates considered her fear of potential further harm if he does not receive help.
Rachel Smith, representing the defendant, explained that there was a long-standing tumultuous relationship between the siblings, with Patel denying he suffers from mental health issues in the way she believes he does.
Smith stated: "On the day, there was a heated argument at the family home which escalated, leading her to call the police.
His parents are supportive of his situation and efforts to get help.
It is clear she prefers him to get assistance rather than face punishment for this offence." Patel, of St Lukes Close in Batley, was fined £120 and ordered to pay £85 in court costs and a £30 victim surcharge.
The woman's concerns highlight ongoing issues surrounding mental health and cultural barriers in domestic abuse situations.
