A jealous and violent man burst into his ex partner's home and grabbed her neck before trashing her house after he mistakenly believed there was another man in the house. He later became involved in a police chase during which he sped and drove through red lights.
Haydn Davies, 32, had been in a relationship with his victim and they had three children, but after he was released from prison in 2024 he informed her he did not want to reconcile.
During the court hearing, it was revealed he entered her home in Newport uninvited, took her phone and tablet to browse through her social media, and sent her abusive and foul-mouthed messages.
On the day of the incident, he turned up after mistakenly thinking he heard another man's voice when she accidentally called him.
He demanded to know where the man was, but she denied any knowledge.
Davies then took her phone and stamped on it, broke her television, and grabbed her by the neck, pushing her against the wall.
His daughter called the grandmother, who was threatened and insulted by Davies.
He continued to send threatening messages and make calls from unknown numbers following the incident.
On July 21, police chased him after noticing him in a vehicle, during which he reached speeds of 70mph and drove through red lights before being detained.
Following his release on bail, he continued calling the victim until August.
Davies pleaded guilty to multiple charges including assault occasioning actual bodily harm, harassment, criminal damage, sending offensive/obscene messages, and dangerous driving.
He has ten prior convictions, mostly as a juvenile, with the most recent for arson.
In mitigation, his lawyer explained he struggled to cope with the breakup, resorted to alcohol and drugs, taking cocaine and drinking up to ten pints daily.
The court sentenced him to 21 months imprisonment, suspended for 18 months, and ordered him to undertake rehabilitation, alcohol treatment, and a 2-year driving disqualification, as well as a restraining order.
The judge described his behaviour as 'outrageous and out of control.'
