GILLIAN SORBIE FROM GLENROTHES BANNED AFTER VAPE SCANDAL AND ABUSIVE MESSAGES
Gillian Sorbie, a care support worker based in Glenrothes, has been permanently disqualified from working in any social care or social work roles across Scotland following a series of serious misconduct allegations. The Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) conducted a thorough investigation into her conduct after receiving reports of inappropriate behavior and misconduct. It was revealed that Sorbie had openly boasted on her social media platforms about selling vapes to minors, specifically targeting children as young as 11 years old. This revelation raised significant concerns about her suitability to work with vulnerable populations, especially children. Court records further confirmed her involvement in illegal activities, as she was convicted of selling a vape to a 12-year-old. She was subsequently fined £150 at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court for this offence.
The SSSC investigation uncovered a disturbing pattern of behavior, including the exchange of offensive and abusive messages. It was found that Sorbie used derogatory language, referring to a pupil as a 'slutbag' and repeatedly telling another individual to 'keep quiet' about her dealings. In an attempt to conceal her misconduct, she tried to delete certain messages, which the watchdog considered a serious breach of professional standards. These actions raised grave concerns about her core values and her capacity to work safely and ethically with children and vulnerable individuals.
During her interview with the SSSC, Sorbie admitted to the charges but claimed she was 'backed into a corner.' She denied ever selling vapes or behaving abusively, suggesting that the accusations stemmed from children who had made false claims. Despite her denials, the evidence against her was compelling, and her actions demonstrated a clear lack of remorse or insight into the severity of her misconduct.
In light of these findings, the SSSC decided to impose a permanent disqualification order, effectively banning Sorbie from working in any capacity within the social care sector in Scotland. Her appeal period has now closed, and the decision is final. Sorbie also gave an interview in which she maintained her innocence, claiming she sold vapes at the request of children and lamenting that 'they went to the police and I was found guilty.' Her comments and the investigation's findings underscore the seriousness of her misconduct and the potential risks posed to vulnerable individuals under her care.
