HUDDERSFIELD MAN WHO SLIT HIS OWN THROAT IN COURT RETURNS IN HANDCUFFS
A man who slit his throat after smuggling a blade into court has admitted assaulting his fiancée.And extra security measures were in force today when Gary Bell appeared [at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court](http://www.examiner.co.uk/all-about/kirklees-magistrates-court).
Bell [hit the headlines in August when he brought a craft knife blade](http://www.examiner.co.uk/news/west-yorkshire-news/district-judge-hailed-hero-after-7550161) into the Huddersfield court, using Rizla cigarette papers to conceal it as he passed through security.
As he was sentenced to 16 weeks in jail for charges of assault and criminal damage Bell, of Sycamore Court in Golcar, [used the blade to slash his throat](http://www.examiner.co.uk/news/west-yorkshire-news/milnsbridge-man-gary-bell-who-7554451).
A court security guard was also injured during the drama.
Today Bell, 21, pleaded guilty to a charge of assault.
He appeared at the court in custody and District Judge Michael Fanning agreed to a prosecution application to keep him in handcuffs throughout the proceedings.
Mr Fanning said that the precaution was necessary after Bell previously injured officers and concealed a weapon.
More time was taken to bring Bell into court from the cells and extra police officers assisted security staff in the secure dock.
The court heard that Bell assaulted his American fiancée Caitlin Horner on January 10.
The couple had been involved in an online relationship before Horner came to stay at Bell’s flat in November on a visitor visa.
On the day of the incident the couple had been drinking and an argument developed.
Prosecutor Alex Bozman said that Horner landed the initial punch before Bell retaliated and punched her to the back of her head.
He added: “He smashed some glass items, causing both parties to sustain cuts.
“This caused a neighbour to call police.
“He said that the relationship is OK but she is not very good at taking her drink and drinks vodka very fast.” Mr Bozman also added that Bell was kept in custody for his own safety after making remarks about shooting himself.
Judge Fanning ordered a full report before sentencing him on February 2.
Horner, 19, also appeared in court charged with assault and will be sentenced after meeting with probation staff.
