GARETH OLDKNOW SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL OFFENCES AGAINST CHILD IN NOTTINGHAM

In September 2012, a 33-year-old man from Nottingham, Gareth Oldknow of Willow Cottages in Aspley, was convicted and sentenced for a series of severe sexual offences committed against a young girl. Following a trial at Nottingham Crown Court, Oldknow was found guilty of 11 counts, including rape, assault by penetration, and sexual activity with a minor.

He was sentenced on 21 September to a total of 15 years in prison, served concurrently. His sentences include 15 years for two counts of raping a child under 13, 10 years for assault by penetration of a child under 13, five years for seven counts of sexual activity with a child, and an additional 12 months for another count of sexual activity.

Judge Andrew Hamilton described Oldknow’s actions as having caused the victim to 'lose her childhood' and emphasized that he is a significant danger to young girls. The judge also ordered Oldknow to be placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life, issued an extended licence for five years, and imposed a life ban on working with children.

DC Debbie Wattley, of Nottinghamshire Police’s Child Abuse Investigation Unit, led the inquiry. She stated, 'The acts committed upon this child were truly horrific and had a devastating effect upon her. Despite this, she remained strong throughout a robust cross-examination by the defence and was key to securing this important conviction. Credit should go to her for her incredible courage.'

Detective Inspector Yvonne Dales praised DC Wattley for her professionalism, saying, 'DC Wattley’s care and professionalism in dealing with the victim, and her preparation of the case papers was outstanding. She remained focused upon the task in what was often the face of adversity.'

The investigation also involved the Force’s Digital Investigation Unit, which extracted vital evidence from multiple mobile phones. The case benefited greatly from the support provided by Imara, a local child abuse advice agency that offered assistance to the victim and her family throughout the process.

DI Dales affirmed Nottinghamshire Police’s commitment to safeguarding children, stating, 'Nottinghamshire Police is committed to preventing crimes against children and holding to account those who commit such acts. By working with our partner agencies, we aim to protect vulnerable children from harm.'
