MAN HARASSES EX OVER SIX WEEKS AND IS BANNED FROM SEEING HER
A man who harassed his ex-partner over a six week period has been banned from seeing her.Gareth Clavin repeatedly called and followed his former partner and turned up at addresses where he knew she'd be, Kirklees magistrates were told.
He pleaded guilty to harassment but claimed that there was a plausible explanation for much of his behaviour.
Prosecutor Natalie Chapman said that the victim decided she wanted to end the relationship because she found the 33-year-old controlling.
While he was admitted to hospital she took the opportunity to leave with her belongings but the next day Clavin, of Cleveland Road in Marsh, called round at her grandmother's address wishing to speak with her.
On another date the victim came across Clavin as she dropped her child off at school and he took her phone and went through her messages.
She said she was frightened by his behaviour and on other occasions he drove past his ex as she was with a friend and waited outside her place of work.
Miss Chapman said: “He asked to speak with her and knelt in the doorway of her car, taking her phone and checking her messages.
The defendant asked her to go to police and drop the allegations.” On July 13 Clavin turned up at the home of the victim's mother in Leeds while she was staying there for the weekend.
Then three days later he turned up again as she was dropping her child off at school with the dog they had shared during the relationship.
Miss Chapman said: “He placed the dog in the footwell of the vehicle and stopped her from leaving for half an hour.
“The next day the defendant said he'd keyed all the doors and wrote his name on the bonnet of her car but that was not the case.
“She told the defendant he was scaring her and that the relationship was over.” Clavin did not accept all of the allegations about his behaviour towards his ex and said that much of this could be explained.
Magistrates sentenced him to a community order with 20 rehabilitation activity days.
They made a restraining order banning him from contacting his ex or going to various addresses in Huddersfield and Leeds for the next year.
