ETHAN JOHNSON FROM STOCKTON SENTENCED IN ONLINE PAEDOPHILE RING CASE INVOLVING HORRIFIC CHILD ABUSE IMAGES
In June 2022, a man from Stockton named Ethan Johnson was handed a suspended prison sentence after being implicated in a disturbing online paedophile network that shared extremely graphic images and videos depicting the sexual abuse and rape of children. The case, which was prosecuted at Teesside Crown Court, revealed the extent of Johnson’s involvement in this illicit activity and the measures taken by law enforcement to bring him to justice.
Johnson, aged 20, was identified as a participant in a clandestine online group where members exchanged and stored vile content.
He operated under the username "project infinity" on a cloud-based platform, where he stored videos showing naked children.
The court heard that the group was highly organized, with moderators actively threatening members with expulsion if they failed to share illegal material.
The group’s members made specific requests for footage involving the sexual abuse of infants, highlighting the depravity of their activities.
Authorities acted on intelligence gathered through online surveillance, which led to a police raid at Johnson’s residence on June 26, 2020.
During the search, officers seized a significant number of electronic devices.
An analysis of Johnson’s mobile phone revealed that he possessed 223 videos depicting children being sexually abused, raped, or tortured—classified as Category A, indicating the most severe level of abuse.
Additionally, police found 107 images categorized as Category B and 29 as Category C, further illustrating the extent of his involvement in this heinous crime.
Further investigations uncovered disturbing communications between Johnson and a 14-year-old girl from Newcastle.
Police found that Johnson had been messaging her via Snapchat, where he attempted to engage her in sexual conversations.
When the girl expressed her reluctance to send nude photos, Johnson offered her “some sexual healing.” After she challenged his inappropriate messages and expressed her desire to cease contact, Johnson continued to pursue her.
Police discovered that he later texted her, saying, “If we do end up having sex we will have to keep it quiet as I could end up getting arrested and on the sex offenders register.” Tracing the girl’s account, authorities confirmed that she had sent Johnson explicit pictures of herself engaged in sexual acts.
Johnson, who resides on Imperial Crescent in Stockton, pleaded guilty to two counts of inciting a girl to engage in sexual activity.
The court was informed that he had no prior convictions, which was taken into account during sentencing.
During the hearing, Judge Paul Watson emphasized the gravity of Johnson’s crimes, stating, “This is not a victimless crime.
There are real children often from financially and emotionally deprived backgrounds— they are subjected to unimaginable pain and abuse—so that you, and people like you, can access these images.” The judge also acknowledged the disturbing conversation between Johnson and the 14-year-old girl, describing it as “grossly sexual.” Despite this, he noted the heartfelt testimonies and a moving letter from Johnson’s parents, which highlighted a different side of his character and his sensitivity.
Ultimately, Johnson was sentenced to 13 months in prison, suspended for 18 months.
He was ordered to complete 25 days of rehabilitation and was placed under a five-year sexual harm prevention order, which includes police notification requirements for the next decade.
The judge warned him that if he were to download more illegal images or communicate with underage girls again, he would serve the full 13-month sentence without further delay.
The court’s decision underscores the serious nature of his offenses and the ongoing efforts to protect children from exploitation and abuse.
