EMMA-MARIE THOMPSON OF MILLOM SENTENCED FOR CRUELTY TO DOG
Emma-Marie Thompson of Lapstone Road, Millom LA18 4BT, was convicted in 2022 for keeping a severely underweight dog in her backyard. The dog, a three-year-old German Shepherd cross named Xena, was so emaciated that her ribs, spine, and pelvic bones were clearly visible. Thompson, a full-time mother, pleaded guilty to charges of causing unnecessary suffering to a dog and failing to meet its needs.RSPCA inspector Martyn Fletcher responded to reports of a concern for a dog at Thompson’s address. On January 15, 2022, he visited the property and was shown into the backyard, where he found Xena in a dire state. Inspector Fletcher stated: “I could immediately see that the dog was in a very poor bodily condition, with its spine and hip bones prominent and its ribs visible. The dog’s head also had a sunken appearance. It was subdued and uninterested in my presence.”
Xena was taken to a veterinary clinic for assessment, which revealed she weighed just 15kg and had a body condition score of only one out of five. She also had two skin lesions on her legs. Blood tests confirmed she was suffering from severe malnutrition. Vet Emily Jones remarked in her witness statement: “I would have expected a dog of her stature to be a minimum of 27kg, so she was severely underweight. There is no other reason for her emaciated condition other than starvation through malnutrition.”
The day after the inspection, Thompson agreed to surrender Xena into the care of RSPCA Cumbria West Branch. The court was told that Thompson was experiencing mental health problems following multiple bereavements. Since being cared for by the RSPCA, Xena has recovered well, regained a healthy weight, and has been rehomed with new owners.
Following the court proceedings, Inspector Fletcher commented: “This case shows again how important it is for members of the public to report any suspicions of animal neglect to the RSPCA so we can investigate. I am thrilled to see that Xena has progressed so well in RSPCA care and is now a healthy dog who loves her new home.”
Thompson was sentenced to a six-week curfew, 25 rehabilitation activity days, and received a five-year ban on keeping animals.
