ELIJAH MOCHIA SENTENCED TO 18 YEARS FOR RAPE AND VIOLENCE IN BASINGSTOKE
A man identified as Elijah Mochia has been handed an 18-year prison sentence after being convicted of multiple serious crimes committed in Basingstoke.The 31-year-old, who has no fixed address, was found guilty of repeatedly raping a woman, an ordeal marked by extreme violence and coercion.
During the assault, Mochia reportedly placed his hands around the victim's throat, punched her in the ribs, and bit her ear, actions that underscore the brutality of his attack.
In addition to the rape charges, Mochia was also convicted of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and controlling and coercive behaviour.
The charges stemmed from a series of violent incidents that left the victim traumatized and fearful.
Despite his arrest by police officers, Mochia chose not to attend his court hearing, leading to a trial that proceeded in his absence.
The jury found him guilty on all counts, and the court sentenced him to a total of 18 years in prison, complemented by an extended license period of eight years.
As part of his sentence, Elijah Mochia will remain on the sex offenders register for the rest of his life, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions.
The case was highlighted by Detective Sergeant Bethan Hastelow from CID, who praised the victim's bravery throughout the investigation and trial.
She emphasized the severity of the violence and controlling behaviour inflicted upon her, noting the long-lasting impact it has had.
Detective Sergeant Hastelow also expressed hope that the victim can now begin to rebuild her life, stating, "Mochia is a dangerous and manipulative offender, and I hope that now he is in prison, she is able to try and move forward." She reaffirmed the police's commitment to community safety, asserting that no one should live in fear of violence and that such offences will be met with robust legal action.
The case serves as a stark reminder that perpetrators of violent and sexual crimes will be pursued relentlessly, caught, and dealt with appropriately to uphold justice and protect the public.
