FIFE MAN DOUGLAS GIBLIN STEALS DEAD DOG'S ASHES DURING YEARS OF DOMESTIC ABUSE IN FIFE
In a disturbing case that highlights a prolonged pattern of domestic abuse and malicious behavior, Douglas Giblin, a man from Fife, has been implicated in a series of troubling incidents involving his former partner. The court heard that Giblin, who has a history of previous domestic convictions, engaged in a campaign of harassment and degrading treatment against his ex-girlfriend over a span of several years, from 2017 to 2021.During this period, Giblin subjected his former partner to relentless torment, which included belittling her, forcibly taking her phone, and making threats against her friends. His actions extended beyond verbal abuse, as he would frequently turn up unannounced at her workplace, causing her significant distress and fear. The court was informed that Giblin's behavior was not only persistent but also increasingly invasive and threatening.
One of the most shocking revelations was that Giblin threatened to send intimate photographs of the woman to her father, a move that added a layer of humiliation and intimidation to his harassment. To evade her attempts to block him on social media, Giblin created multiple Facebook accounts, and he would also call her from different phone numbers, making it difficult for her to screen his calls. These tactics were part of a broader pattern of stalking and harassment that persisted over several years.
In a particularly distressing incident, Giblin locked his former partner inside his house during an argument, further demonstrating his controlling and aggressive behavior. The court also heard that he stole the ashes of her beloved pet dog after she expressed her desire to end their relationship, an act that was described as both malicious and deeply upsetting.
Depute fiscal Lynne Mannion outlined the extent of Giblin's harassment, stating, “The accused and the witness were in a relationship for around four years. He threatened to send naked pictures of the witness to her father.” The court was also told that Giblin engaged in repeated unsolicited phone calls, with one instance involving him making 108 calls in a single day, illustrating the obsessive nature of his conduct.
Giblin ultimately admitted guilt to the charges brought against him. Sheriff Jillian Martin-Brown, presiding over the case at Dundee Sheriff Court, chose to defer sentencing, warning Giblin that a custodial sentence could be imposed depending on future behavior. The case underscores the serious consequences of domestic abuse and harassment, especially when combined with acts of maliciousness such as theft and intimidation.
