DAVID WILLIAMS FROM ANGLESEY ESCAPES JAIL DESPITE SEX OFFENCES, SON OUTRAGED

In January 2015, a deeply troubling case unfolded at Mold Crown Court involving David Geoffrey Williams, a resident of Anglesey, who was convicted of multiple historic sexual offences. Despite the gravity of his crimes, Williams, aged 73, was not sentenced to immediate imprisonment. Instead, Judge David Hale handed down a sentence of 16 months in prison, but notably, this sentence was suspended for a period of two years, allowing Williams to avoid incarceration for the time being.

Williams’ son, Paul, who is 37 years old, expressed profound disappointment and anger over the court’s decision. He described feeling crushed in the courtroom when he learned that his father would not serve time behind bars. Paul voiced his frustration, stating, “(My dad) was in the pub on Wednesday night. That’s not justice.” He further lamented the impact of the case on his family, emphasizing that the entire ordeal has caused a rift within their relationships. “This whole saga has torn my family apart but he is allowed to continue his life,” Paul said, highlighting his disillusionment with the justice system.

Williams, a retired egg wholesaler residing in Llanbedrgoch, was also ordered to sign the sex offenders register for seven years as part of his sentence. The offences for which he was convicted involved sexual misconduct with underage girls during the 1970s. The revelation of his crimes came to light in 2012 when Paul discovered the truth about his father’s past. Initially, Paul struggled to believe the allegations, taking two weeks to process the information. Eventually, he confronted his father, who denied the accusations. Feeling compelled to act, Paul reported the matter to the police.

Discovering his father’s past as a paedophile profoundly changed Paul’s perception of him. “All the nice memories I had of him teaching me how to drive, they mean nothing now,” he admitted. The betrayal has led Paul to sever his relationship with his father, stating, “I do not want to speak to him any more. I wouldn’t mind so much if he had admitted it and faced the consequences. But throughout the whole ordeal, he denied it and insulted the victims. He should be in jail for what he has done.”

There is also concern about Williams’ continued involvement in community activities, specifically at Benllech Rugby Club. Paul expressed his apprehension, saying, “I know I’ll see him there but I don’t want to see him ever again and I don’t want my son to know him. My son is only 10 and I have to explain why he can’t see grandad.” The case has sparked outrage and disappointment, with many questioning the adequacy of the sentence handed down to a man convicted of such serious offences.
