VIOLENT ABUSER SENTENCED TO FOUR YEARS FOR LONG-RUNNING DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND STALKING
Zak Engen, aged 34 from Maes Garnedd, Tregele, Cemaes, has received a four-year prison sentence following a series of abusive actions against his former partner and subsequent stalking. The court heard testimony describing Engen as 'violent and manipulative,' with allegations that he physically assaulted his ex-partner and displayed controlling behavior.
Prosecutor Elen Owen outlined a history of abuse dating back to 2017, which included pulling her hair, grabbing her by the throat while she was sleeping, depriving her of sleep, throwing a suitcase at her, and delivering multiple punches in different areas.
Additionally, he threatened self-harm, used their children to intimidate her, and continued to follow her after the relationship had ended.
The victim suffered from depression, anxiety, feelings of worthlessness, and humiliation, often concealing bruises with makeup.
Engen's abusive conduct also involved harassment via social media and following her to locations such as Weymouth and Anglesey.
His arrest was made after she reported him to the police.
The court also recognized that Engen has a long history of similar offences, with incidents dating back to 2007 involving other partners, indicating a pattern of violent and abusive behavior.
Although there have been some recent positive changes, including abstaining from drugs and infrequent drinking, his prior convictions influenced the four-year custodial sentence, with an expectation of serving up to half in prison and the rest on licence.
A restraining order was issued, preventing him from making contact with the victim for 20 years, and he was ordered to pay a surcharge.
