DAVID WALLER FROM SUNDERLAND SENTENCED TO 16 YEARS FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF UNDERAGE GIRL IN THE NORTH-EAST
In a case that has shocked the local community of Sunderland and the wider North-East region, David Waller, a man from Sunderland, was sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 16 years on Friday, April 19.The conviction stems from a disturbing and prolonged sexual relationship with a teenage girl that lasted for approximately 14 months, during which Waller engaged in a series of inappropriate and illegal acts.
Durham Crown Court heard detailed accounts of Waller’s conduct, revealing that he maintained a manipulative and predatory relationship with the underage girl.
Waller reportedly told her that their intimate encounters were not merely casual sex but were, in his words, “making love,” a phrase that underscores the disturbing nature of his deception.
The court was informed that Waller provided the girl with alcohol and cigarettes, further enabling their encounters and blurring the lines of consent and legality.
The locations where their illicit meetings took place were varied and included a caravan in Teesdale, a rented flat in Chester-le-Street, a car parked outside St Peter’s Church, a site in Monkwearmouth, Sunderland, and even in the parking lot of an Asda supermarket.
During these encounters, Waller also gifted the girl money, with amounts reaching up to £100, indicating an element of financial manipulation or coercion.
The relationship came to an end several years prior to the court proceedings, shortly after Waller committed a sexual act that the girl objected to.
The girl, whose identity remains protected, later confided in her boyfriend and her mother about the secret she had been carrying.
Her revelations came after a birthday celebration in September 2011, during which she disclosed the details of her relationship with Waller.
Additionally, she kept a diary with coded entries documenting her encounters, which proved crucial in the investigation.
Following her disclosures, police were alerted, leading to the arrest of 44-year-old David Waller, who resides on Devonshire Street in Sunderland.
He faced multiple charges, including one count of rape and six counts of engaging in sexual activity with a child.
Waller denied all allegations, claiming that the girl had fabricated the story in an attempt to secure compensation.
However, after a week-long trial, the jury unanimously found him guilty on all seven counts last month.
During the sentencing hearing, Paul Newcombe, representing the prosecution, highlighted that Waller continued to deny the charges and pointed out that there was no evidence of force being used during the incidents.
The defense argued that Waller was a hardworking man who had recently experienced setbacks in his business endeavors.
Despite this, the judge, Christopher Prince, delivered a stern verdict, emphasizing Waller’s lack of remorse and empathy.
The judge described him as “a self-centred, selfish and arrogant man who manipulated this young girl for sexual pleasure.” As part of his sentence, Waller was ordered to serve 16 years in prison.
Furthermore, the court imposed a lifelong ban on any contact with the victim and mandated that he register as a sex offender permanently.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by individuals who exploit vulnerable minors and the importance of vigilant law enforcement in protecting young people from such predatory behavior.
