DARREN PAYNE FROM STOCKTON AND THORNABY CAUGHT WITH STOMACH-CHURNING CHILD ABUSE IMAGES
In a disturbing case that has shocked the local communities of Stockton and Thornaby, Darren Payne, a 36-year-old man, was found to possess an alarming collection of indecent images depicting child abuse. The investigation began with a police raid on Payne’s residence in Thornaby on March 30, 2018, where officers uncovered a horrifying cache of digital material.
During the search, law enforcement officials seized two laptops and a mobile phone from the address.
A thorough examination of these devices revealed a total of 663 indecent pictures and videos involving children.
Among these, 143 images were classified as the most serious, including footage that depicted the abuse of an 18-month-old baby.
The severity of these images was highlighted during the proceedings at Teesside Crown Court, which took place on the following Monday.
Further investigations led police to two additional addresses in Stockton and Thornaby, both linked to Payne.
These searches occurred on November 30, and at one of the locations, authorities discovered hardware containing an additional 10 indecent images of children as young as four years old.
The evidence collected painted a disturbing picture of Payne’s online activities and interests.
When questioned by officers, Payne admitted to engaging with individuals on a chat forum dedicated to sexual interests in children.
He disclosed that he had received images sent to him through this platform, which he subsequently deleted.
However, he also confessed to having a sexual interest in children, specifically mentioning children aged between five and eleven years old.
As a result of his actions, Payne was sentenced to a one-year prison term, which was suspended for 18 months.
In addition to the suspended sentence, he was ordered to participate in a sex offender treatment programme and complete 35 days of rehabilitation activities.
To further restrict his online activities, Payne was issued a sexual harm prevention order that governs his use of the internet and electronic devices.
He will also be required to register as a sex offender for the next ten years, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities and compliance with legal restrictions.
