LIFE SENTENCE IMPOSED ON MAN FOR MURDERING STEPFATHER IN HUDDERSFIELD
Darren Gregson, 30, was sentenced to life imprisonment with no possibility of parole for 12 years for murdering his stepfather, Mark Berry.
The court found him guilty of stabbing Mr Berry seven times at the family home on June 3 this year.
Gregson claimed he had been provoked, lost control, and could not remember the incident.
The judge described the environment as caused by the sad alcoholic condition of the stepfather and noted that Gregson had largely ignored his stepfather, only responding with mild rebuffs or removing himself from his presence.
The jury rejected Gregson’s claim of provocation.
Mrs Philbrick, sister of the victim, said she was 'very happy' with the verdict, expressing her anger and grief over her brother’s death.
The court heard how Mr Berry, an alcoholic and former Tesco manager, was abusive to Gregson and his mother, which contributed to the tense atmosphere.
Gregson showed no emotion after the verdict, and the judge emphasized that although provoked, he did not deserve the injuries inflicted.
Senior investigating officer Det Supt Paul Taylor commented on the tragedy, stating there are no winners in such a situation.
