DANIEL SWIFT CAUGHT IN LINCOLN CHILD SEX GROOMING SCHEME BY ONLINE VIGILANTES

In August 2017, a disturbing case unfolded in Lincoln involving a man named Daniel Swift, who engaged in a sinister online grooming operation targeting what he believed was a 14-year-old girl.

The incident came to light when internet vigilantes, acting on their own initiative, set a trap that ultimately led to Swift's arrest and subsequent court proceedings.

Swift, a resident of Lincoln, had been communicating with an individual he thought was a teenage girl named ‘Emms’.

Over the course of their online interactions, he was persuaded to send explicit photographs and videos, revealing his intentions to meet her in person for sexual activity.

Swift was under the impression that ‘Emms’ was a genuine 14-year-old girl, and he made arrangements for her to travel from Guildford to Lincoln by train, with the expectation of meeting her at Lincoln railway station.

On the day ‘Emms’ was scheduled to arrive, Swift booked a taxi to pick her up from the station and bring her to his home located off Lincoln’s High Street.

However, when the taxi arrived, no one was present at the station to meet him.

This discrepancy prompted further online conversations, during which Swift was persuaded to reveal his home address.

It was at this point that Kirsty Ireland, who had orchestrated the sting, went to Swift’s residence, detained him, and contacted the police.

Prosecutor Richard Thatcher explained to the court that the case originated from Swift’s social media contact with ‘Emms’, whom he believed to be a 14-year-old girl.

In reality, ‘Emms’ was an adult woman named Kirsty Ireland, who had created the false online persona as part of the sting operation.

The court was informed that Swift first initiated contact with ‘Emms’ on April 5 of that year, and during their conversations, he expressed a desire for a paternal relationship, asking if she wanted a ‘daddy’ figure to look after her.

The dialogue quickly turned sexual, with Swift asking about involvement with her mother and making inappropriate comments such as ‘Daddy loves his little girls not their mummies’.

As the conversations progressed, Swift sent explicit images of his genitals and videos, clearly indicating his intent to engage in sexual activity.

He even proposed a group sexual encounter involving ‘Emms’, her 10-year-old sister, and her 14-year-old cousin.

Swift’s plans included traveling from Lincoln to Guildford, where he believed ‘Emms’ was located, to meet her in person.

At the court hearing, Swift, aged 47 and residing on Princess Street in Lincoln, admitted to charges of attempting to communicate sexually with a child and attempting to meet a child following grooming.

It was revealed that he has a long history of mental health issues, having been treated for over 25 years and diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia.

The court was informed that Swift had been involved with mental health services since 1989, with multiple admissions to psychiatric facilities.

Psychiatrist Dr.

Jaspreet Phull testified that Swift’s mental health condition was severe enough to warrant hospital treatment for his safety and the safety of others.

Based on this assessment, the court ordered that Swift be detained in a secure psychiatric unit under a hospital order.

The judge, Simon Hirst, also imposed a five-year sexual harm prevention order and registered Swift on the sex offenders register.

In delivering his sentence, Judge Hirst emphasized the complex circumstances of the case, citing Swift’s character, past conduct, and longstanding mental health issues.

He stated that the most appropriate course of action was to manage Swift’s condition through an order under the Mental Health Act of 1933, ensuring both his treatment and public safety.
