RAPIST AND EX-POLICE OFFICER SENTENCED AFTER BRUTAL ATTACK AND COVER-UP
“Shut up, you know it’s happening” - those are the chilling words a rapist told his victim moments before he launched a vile sex attack.Daniel Summers, aged 29, will spend the next decade behind bars for a sex attack, including the rape of a woman, after which he told her to “kill herself”.
The court also heard that his stepdad, Lee Justin Busby, a former police officer, was jailed for 18 months for offering advice to Summers on what to say to police regarding the violence against a woman, despite not being informed about the rape charge.
Summers was found guilty of rape and assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Busby was convicted of perverting the course of justice and was sentenced to 18 months, though he remains suspended from the police force pending a misconduct hearing.
The court detailed Summers’ ‘spontaneous’ attack where he knocked a woman to the floor, punched her, and later raped her after drinking together.
His stepson approached him about violence against a woman, and Busby advised him to downplay the incident to police and to ‘be careful what you say’, which contributed to further distress for the victim.
The victim described the incident’s lasting impact, including damage to her mental health, feelings of fear, and flashbacks.
Summers and Busby had no previous convictions.
Summers denied the rape and assault, while Busby denied perverting the course of justice.
The judge highlighted that Summers caused “severe psychological harm” and showed “victim blaming”, and Busby was said to have “maintained his innocence” despite the conviction.
Following his sentencing, Summers is to serve 10 years, and Busby 18 months.
The police emphasized the victim’s bravery in reporting the crimes and reaffirmed that Busby has lost his career in law enforcement due to his actions.
