HUDDERSFIELD MAN JAILED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT AFTER BRUTALLY RAPING SLEEPING WOMAN
A woman who was raped while she was sleeping has earnestly encouraged other victims of sexual assault to report their attackers. The attacker, Daniel Shelton, aged 24, assaulted her in 2019.
Shelton, from Prospect Road in Huddersfield, was convicted of the crime at Leeds Crown Court earlier this year and sentenced to five years in prison.
He is expected to serve half of his sentence in detention before being released on license.
The survivor has shared her experience openly to inspire others to report crimes and seek justice.
She explained that she was drinking with friends before the assault, then woke up to find Shelton raping her.
She said, “In the night he came into the bedroom and raped me,” adding she was asleep at the time after drinking heavily.
Upon awakening, she screamed 'Get off me,' and after realizing what was happening, she challenged Shelton.
She reported the assault two days later, after waiting more than two years for justice.
She was present at Shelton’s sentencing, wanting to confront him directly and said, “It's not really closure but I just wanted to be there and look him in the face.” She described Shelton as a “cocky person” who thought he could get away with it, especially since the process took so long, partly due to the impact of COVID-19.
She encourages other victims to come forward and hopes her story will motivate others to report sexual offences.
