CHRISTOPHER OLDFIELD SENTENCED FOR ABUSE AT STOCKTON CHILDREN'S HOME
In a case that has shocked the community of Stockton, Christopher Oldfield, a 49-year-old former head of a children's home, was sentenced to four years in prison for serious allegations of indecent assault against young boys under his care. The incident took place at Elm Tree Farm, a community home located in Stockton, where Oldfield was responsible for the welfare of the children. The court proceedings at Newcastle Crown Court revealed that Oldfield exploited his position of authority to lure vulnerable children to his private flat, where he would watch videos with them. These actions constituted a pattern of abuse that spanned several years, specifically from 1977 to 1983. Oldfield was convicted on five counts of indecent assault related to these incidents. However, during the trial, the court also heard that three additional charges, along with a charge of buggery, had been dropped, possibly due to insufficient evidence or other legal reasons.
The disturbing nature of the case was brought to light many years after the offences occurred. It was only in 1990, when one of the victims, who had since become an abuser himself, was questioned by police, that the allegations surfaced. This delayed revelation underscores the long-lasting impact of the abuse and the difficulties in bringing such cases to justice.
Oldfield’s suspension by the SSD (Social Services Department) occurred in 1990, two years prior to his sentencing, indicating that authorities had taken action once the allegations were substantiated. The case highlights the importance of safeguarding measures in children’s homes and the ongoing need for vigilance to protect vulnerable children from exploitation and abuse.
