BANGOR MAN HANDED SUSPENDED SENTENCE FOR CONTROLLING GIRLFRIEND WITH MANIPULATION AND LIES

A man named Carwyn Roberts from Bangor has been convicted of controlling and coercive behaviour towards his girlfriend.

He pretended to be various professionals including a lawyer, doctor, and council official, to manipulate her.

Roberts used fake email accounts to lie about her being drugged and abused, claimed she was pregnant, and fabricated an inheritance of £300,000 to convince her to move into a non-existent house.

He also staged fake employment and legal proceedings, making her believe she was under criminal investigation.

The victim, who had a history of anxiety and depression, described how Roberts manipulated her, knowing how to make her feel special and safe, only to exploit her insecurities.

She felt ashamed when she thought he was watching her pack to move to the apartment that did not exist.

Roberts was sentenced to two years imprisonment, suspended for two years, and was ordered to carry out 150 hours of community service.

Additionally, a restraining order was put in place banning him from contacting her or her daughter.

The Crown Prosecution Service described his manipulation as 'staggering,' emphasizing how he lied repeatedly through various fake accounts and emails.

The case was deemed serious and sad, with the judge condemning Roberts’ behavior as 'cruel and despicable.' He was also ordered to pay more than £3,000 in court costs.
