DEPRESSED MUM KILLS BABY AFTER HUSBAND'S AFFAIR LEADS TO HOSPITAL TREATMENT ORDER
A mother who suffered severe postnatal depression after her husband, Mark, 36, revealed he had been having an affair with one of her best friends, caused the death of her seven-month-old daughter Skye.
Carly Jacques, 32, pleaded guilty to infanticide and was sentenced yesterday to a hospital treatment order.
Judge Michael Pert QC stated, "I am satisfied that what led you to that terrible act was illness rather than wickedness." The court heard that Carly had smothered her daughter following delusions that people wanted to harm the child.
The incident occurred in October at their family home in Leicester.
When Mark found Carly holding their deceased baby, she attempted to slash her own wrists.
The case highlighted her mental health struggles, which deteriorated after discovering her husband's affair.
Mary Prior, in mitigation, explained to the court that the cause was her illness, not wickedness, recognizing the profound impact of her mental state.
Carly's mental health issues stemmed from her husband's prolonged affair, which lasted at least 18 months, and this contributed to her tragic actions.
