MAN WHO CHOKED AND BEAT FORMER PARTNER JAILED
A man responsible for choking his ex-partner has received a prison sentence.Cameron Ashley, aged 24, became violent during an argument on 22 March this year, during which he grabbed her around the neck and restricted her airflow.
On 14 April, he carried out another prolonged assault at his residence in Highlanders Hill, Mansfield, which included punching her in the face.
A friend of the victim witnessed much of this incident and was able to record some of the events on her phone.
Additionally, photographs showing significant bruising from an earlier assault were later provided to authorities.
Ashley was detained three days subsequent to the assaults at a hotel in Newark, where the victim had gone to meet him.
During police interviews, Ashley mostly responded with “no comment,” even when presented with audio recordings of threats made against the victim.
He also argued with officers when they informed him about a Domestic Violence Protection Notice (DVPN), which prohibited him from contacting her further.
Prior to his trial scheduled for September, Ashley pleaded guilty to charges of intentional strangulation and assault causing actual bodily harm.
He also acknowledged engaging in controlling and coercive behaviors.
Several other charges, including additional assault and strangulation counts, were left on file.
Furthermore, Ashley admitted to a public order offence after abusing and threatening two police officers in a previous incident.
On 10 December, at Nottingham Crown Court, Ashley was sentenced to three years and two months in prison.
He was also subjected to an indefinite restraining order, barring him from any future contact with the victim or her friend.
