BRANDA BATEMAN FROM MILFORD HAVEN FACES JUSTICE OVER HORRIFIC ANIMAL NEGLECT IN PEMBROKESHIRE

Brenda Bateman, a resident of Charles Street in Milford Haven, was found guilty in 2017 of severe animal welfare violations involving her elderly dog, Jess, a collie-cross.

The case, heard at Haverfordwest Magistrates’ Court, revealed the extent of neglect that Jess endured under Bateman’s care, ultimately leading to the dog’s euthanasia.

According to court records, Bateman failed to provide necessary veterinary treatment for Jess, who was suffering from a serious chronic skin condition and arthritis.

These untreated health issues caused Jess significant pain and discomfort, highlighting a blatant disregard for her well-being.

The magistrates also heard that Bateman neglected to trim Jess’s overgrown nails, which contributed to her difficulty walking and further deteriorated her quality of life.

Jess’s condition worsened over time, and despite her suffering, Bateman did not seek medical intervention.

The neglect was so severe that veterinary professionals recommended euthanasia to alleviate her pain.

Jess was subsequently put to sleep due to her ongoing health problems, a tragic end that underscored the consequences of neglect.

Following the case, Keith Hogben, an inspector with RSPCA Cymru, expressed his dismay at the level of cruelty inflicted upon Jess.

He stated, “The level of neglect experienced by this poor dog was horrendous.

Jess had a severe chronic skin condition and overgrown nails, which impacted how she walked.

It’s so sad that the neglect she endured sadly meant she lost her life.” Hogben emphasized the importance of responsible pet ownership, reminding the public that individuals have clear legal obligations to care for their animals properly.

The court imposed a sentence that included a fine of £220, costs of £300, and a victim surcharge of £30.

Additionally, Bateman was banned from keeping animals for a period of seven years, a restriction that was set to expire in March 2024.

The case serves as a stark reminder of the legal and moral responsibilities that come with caring for animals and the consequences of neglecting those duties.
