BILLY FUREY FROM HUDDERSFIELD CONVICTED OVER DANGEROUS DOG ATTACK AND STOLEN CAR INCIDENT
Billy Michael Furey, a resident of Elmfield Avenue in Huddersfield, was found guilty in 2016 of allowing his dog to be dangerously out of control, leading to a severe attack on a woman and her pet.The incident took place near Furey's home in Golcar on March 13, 2014, and resulted in significant injuries that garnered considerable attention from local authorities and the community.
Furey’s dog, believed to be named Spot, was involved in the attack that left Elizabeth Duffield with horrific injuries to her hands.
Mrs.
Duffield was rushed to hospital where she spent five days undergoing treatment for her injuries, which required extensive surgical intervention.
The attack also involved her Jack Russell Terrier, named Buster, which was injured during the incident.
The attack was so severe that the magistrates ordered the immediate destruction of the dog, unless Furey lodged an appeal within 21 days.
During his court appearance before the Kirklees Magistrates, Furey pleaded guilty to charges of owning a dangerous dog that caused injury and for failing to control the animal properly.
The court emphasized the seriousness of the attack, which resulted in significant harm to Mrs.
Duffield and her pet.
In addition to the dog-related charges, Furey faced sentencing for dishonestly receiving stolen goods.
It was revealed that he was driving a stolen Mazda on Riddings Road in Deighton at the time, without a valid license or insurance.
The police stopped Furey during this incident, and in a panic, he reversed the stolen vehicle into the police car behind him, causing him to become stuck.
This reckless behavior further compounded his legal troubles.
The court sentenced Furey to a community order, requiring him to participate in an accredited program for 33 days.
Additionally, he was ordered to pay £200 in compensation to Mrs.
Duffield for the injuries caused by his dog.
His driving license was also endorsed with eight penalty points as a consequence of his reckless driving and illegal activity.
The case drew significant attention from the Huddersfield community and was reported by the Huddersfield Daily Examiner, highlighting ongoing concerns about animal control and vehicle theft in the area.
