BENJAMIN HOLLANDS FROM CHIPPENHAM JAILED FOR SEX OFFENCES INVOLVING TEEN GIRL IN WILTSHIRE

In a disturbing case that highlights the dangers of online grooming and exploitation, Benjamin Hollands, a 41-year-old man from Chippenham, has been sentenced to more than six years in prison for a series of serious sexual offences involving a young girl from Wiltshire.

The case was brought to light after Hollands engaged in a prolonged period of grooming and blackmail against a 13-year-old girl, whom he targeted through social media platforms, primarily Snapchat.

Over a span of approximately ten months, Hollands created multiple fake profiles under different aliases, posing as teenage boys and girls to establish contact with the victim and her two friends.

His manipulative tactics involved sending messages that appeared to be from genuine teenagers, thereby deceiving the girls into believing they were communicating with peers.

The Swindon Crown Court heard that Hollands had initially attempted to secure employment at the school attended by the girls, a Wiltshire institution, just a month before his arrest in October 2018.

However, he withdrew his application before he could be hired.

This detail underscored his persistent attempts to infiltrate environments connected to his victims.

During the court proceedings, Judge Peter Crabtree emphasized the severity of Hollands' actions, stating that the offender had groomed his vulnerable victim with calculated intent.

The judge remarked, “The offences have plainly had a very real impact on her psychologically and also on her family.

Your offending occurred over a period of 10 months, involved very careful planning and included the creation and use of a series of fake profiles to emotionally blackmail and coerce your victim with significant adverse results for her and her family.” The prosecution revealed that Hollands first made contact with the girls in late 2017, when they were in Year 9.

He established half a dozen Snapchat accounts, most of which pretended to belong to teenage boys, to facilitate communication.

Prosecutor Hannah Squire described the defendant’s ability to manipulate these profiles as “breath-taking,” noting that he managed to make the girls believe they were interacting with genuine teenagers.

Evidence showed that Hollands exchanged messages with three girls.

One of the girls, who was more cautious, quickly blocked him after realizing his true intentions.

Another girl was coerced into sending explicit images but also blocked him shortly after.

The third girl, however, was groomed over a period of ten months.

Hollands persuaded her to send numerous nude images and explicit videos, employing a series of fake profiles to deepen her trust and manipulate her further.

To increase her compliance, Hollands used a fabricated story claiming that his mother had died, and he posed as a series of teen boys in conversations.

These fake profiles even threatened violence against each other if the girl did not comply with his demands.

The girl eventually confided in a school counsellor, who described her as distraught.

In a victim statement read aloud in court, she explained that she had to change schools, lost contact with old friends, and her health had deteriorated due to the trauma.

Her family was also deeply affected by the ordeal.

Police investigations traced the social media activity back to Hollands through analysis of the IP addresses associated with the profiles.

Before his arrest, Hollands attempted to destroy evidence by flushing SIM cards and destroying devices.

He was taken into custody in October 2018 and subsequently admitted to his crimes during police interviews conducted in October and November.

Hollands pleaded guilty to 12 offences under the Sexual Offences Act, as well as one count of making indecent images.

His sentencing resulted in a prison term of six years and two months.

Additionally, he is required to sign the sex offenders’ register for life and will be subject to a sexual harm prevention order that restricts his access to the internet indefinitely, aiming to prevent further offences.

This case underscores the ongoing dangers posed by online predators and the importance of vigilance and safeguarding measures to protect vulnerable young people from exploitation and abuse in the digital age.
