BARRY PHILLIPS, THE NORTHAMPTON RAPIST, SENTENCED FOR HISTORIC ABUSE IN CORBY

In a significant case that highlights the ongoing efforts to bring justice to victims of historic sexual abuse, Barry Phillips, a man from Northampton, has been sentenced for offenses committed many years ago. Phillips, who is now 57 years old and residing on Christchurch Road in Northampton, was convicted of serious sexual crimes that took place in Corby during the late 1970s and the 1980s.

His criminal activities involved the sexual abuse and rape of two young girls, incidents that remained hidden for decades before finally coming to light. The allegations were reported to the police in 2010, prompting an investigation that eventually led to Phillips's arrest. The case was brought before Northampton Crown Court, where Phillips pleaded guilty to the charges.

On Thursday, December 13, 2012, Phillips was sentenced to a Section 37 hospital order with a Section 41 restriction. This legal arrangement means that he will be detained in a hospital setting for treatment and assessment, and he cannot be released unless the Secretary of State grants permission. The sentence reflects the severity of his crimes and the need for ongoing supervision and care.

The sentencing followed a conviction in October of rape and indecent assaults that occurred over a span of more than a decade, from 1977 to 1988. The lengthy period between the offenses and the reporting underscores the difficulties victims face in coming forward, especially with crimes of this nature committed many years ago.

Officer Rachael Harris, a member of Corby CID, emphasized the importance of perseverance in cases involving historic sexual offenses. She stated, “Historic sexual offences of this type can be difficult. People often feel that because of the time that has passed it will be hard to get people to believe them or get a conviction. Victims may fear coming forward after such a long time.”

She further expressed her appreciation for the victims’ bravery, saying, “However, this case shows that if you have been a victim, no matter how long ago, you should always contact the police. I would like to thank the victims for their courage and strength, without which it would not have been possible to bring the offender to justice.”

As of July 2015, Phillips remains detained but has changed his name to Sean Thomas, possibly to avoid recognition or for personal reasons. His case remains a stark reminder of the importance of justice for victims of sexual abuse, regardless of how much time has passed since the crimes occurred.
