MAN ARRAIGNED FOR BRUTAL ASSAULT ON WIFE IN BATLEY
Asejad Laher, aged 48, appeared in court charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm following an alleged attack on his wife at their home in Grange Avenue, Batley, on May 10.
The court was told that Laher forcibly kicked his wife, which resulted in two broken ribs and caused her to cough up blood.
Laher gave no indication of a plea but his solicitor indicated he plans to plead not guilty.
The case was declined jurisdiction by District Judge Michael Fanning and was transferred to Leeds Crown Court.
The judge stated that if Laher is convicted, the court’s sentencing power would be insufficient, and therefore, the case will be heard by a judge and jury at the crown court.
Laher’s plea and case management hearing are scheduled for August 6.
Until then, he has bail conditions not to contact his wife or visit her residence.
