HUDDERSFIELD MAN FINED OVER 'APPALLING' DOG BREEDING CONDITIONS
A Huddersfield man, identified as an unregistered dog breeder, has been fined over £11,000 after keeping animals in severely poor conditions.Anthony Dean Core, of Keldregate, Bradley, did not respond to court summonses for a hearing on November 14 at Huddersfield Magistrates' Court but was convicted in his absence on six charges.
These charges related to promoting the dog breeding enterprise without holding the required licence.
Over six months, Core profited by advertising puppies from two litters, with prices between £750 and £1,500 per puppy.
The discovery of the illicit breeding operation occurred during a council inspection aimed at another issue.
Authorities found two adult dogs and a puppy of Staffordshire Bull Terrier in dreadful conditions.
The puppy was taken away from the premises immediately.
Legally, since October 2018, anyone advertising the sale of puppies must have a licence, regardless of the number of litters produced annually.
Core was fined £10,000 after a hearing conducted in his absence last week.
He was also ordered to pay £900 in legal costs and a £190 victim surcharge, which brought the total amount to £11,090.
Councillor Will Simpson, responsible for culture and environmental initiatives in Kirklees, stated: “This case should serve as a warning to others who attempt to bypass licensing laws for profit, often at the expense of the animals’ welfare.
The council remains committed to taking action against unlicensed breeders in the region to uphold animal welfare standards.”
