MENTALLY-ILL MANSFIELD MAN DETAINED FOR KILLING MOTHER
A man with mental health issues who killed his 83-year-old mother at her home in Nottinghamshire has been committed to a hospital.Margaret Clapperton was found dead at her residence on Linton Close, Mansfield, on 28 March, with a post-mortem examination indicating head trauma.
Her son, 58-year-old Anthony Clapperton, pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.
He was placed under a hospital order under Section 37 of the Mental Health Act at Nottingham Crown Court.
The family conveyed their belief that Anthony was not of sound mind at the time of the killing, stating, "We don’t believe Tony was in his right mind when he killed Margaret; he would never have hurt her intentionally.
We know he loved her very much, and she loved him.
Although we may never forgive him, we understand he would not have harmed his mother if he had been mentally well." They also expressed hope that the hospital order will ensure he receives appropriate treatment.
Deputy Chief Inspector Brendan O’Shea from Nottinghamshire Police commented, "This has been a very difficult and tragic time for Mrs Clapperton's family, and I hope today’s outcome ensures Anthony Clapperton gets the care he needs and offers some closure to what happened." Police revealed that Clapperton had provided care for his mother over many years following her illness.
The incident underscores ongoing concerns about mental health and accountability in violent crimes involving mentally ill individuals.
