ANTHONY ALLEYNE: STAR TREK FAN FROM HINCKLEY JAILED FOR CHILD SEX ABUSE IMAGES
In August 2013, Anthony Alleyne, a well-known Star Trek enthusiast from Hinckley, was sentenced to nearly three years in prison after being found guilty of possessing and distributing indecent images of children, as well as possessing extreme pornographic material involving animals. The case drew significant attention due to Alleyne’s reputation as a dedicated sci-fi fan and his elaborate efforts to transform his flat into a replica of the iconic Starship Enterprise.Alleyne, aged 60, had gained fame among Trekkies worldwide for his passionate hobby. Over the course of a decade, he invested substantial time and money into creating an elaborate, high-tech environment within his residence, including a computerized flight deck, voice-activated lighting, and a set of 'transporters' that mimicked those seen in the series. His dedication to his hobby was so intense that he appeared on television programs such as MTV’s Extreme Cribs and ITV’s May The Best House Win, where he showcased his meticulously crafted Star Trek-themed home.
Despite his public persona as a devoted fan, the Leicester Crown Court heard disturbing details about his private activities. Police raided his flat in September of the previous year after information was passed on by an internet crime unit. During the search, officers noted that Alleyne’s entire flat was decorated and outfitted to resemble the Starship Enterprise, a project he had spent years developing. A detailed analysis of his electronic devices revealed that he had stored a staggering 5,083 images, some of which depicted very young children, including babies, in explicit and abusive contexts. The investigation also uncovered two images involving animals in extreme pornography, and it was established that Alleyne had emailed 135 of these images to another individual involved in child abuse.
Alleyne admitted to ten counts each of making and distributing indecent images of children, with the offenses spanning from January 2010 to September 2012. He also pleaded guilty to two counts of possessing extreme pornographic images involving animals. The court was told that his collection was 'massive' and included some of the most serious categories of child abuse images. The prosecution’s case was supported by evidence that Alleyne had spent countless hours viewing and sharing these illicit materials, which contributed to the ongoing demand for such content.
Judge Philip Head sentenced Alleyne to a total of 34 months in prison. In his remarks, the judge emphasized the gravity of the offenses, stating, “Over a period of two-and-three-quarter years, you accessed child pornography in massive quantities. Without people like you consuming such material, there would be no market, and these poor, desperate children would not be treated in such a way.” The judge also noted Alleyne’s apparent lack of remorse and insight, remarking that his only apparent regret was being caught. Additionally, Alleyne was ordered to sign the sex offenders’ register indefinitely, reflecting the seriousness of his crimes.
During the hearing, Alleyne’s defense lawyer, Paul Tubbs, explained that the defendant had become a recluse following his separation from his wife in 1995. He described how Alleyne had dedicated himself entirely to his hobby, spending hundreds of thousands of hours transforming his flat into a Star Trek-themed sanctuary. Tubbs argued that Alleyne’s life revolved around his home, which he used as his primary environment for living, sleeping, and working. The lawyer also highlighted Alleyne’s unemployment and loneliness, suggesting that these factors contributed to his obsession with his hobby and his online activities.
In interviews prior to his arrest, Alleyne had claimed that his conversion of the studio apartment was a way to cope with the stress of his divorce from wife Georgina. His passion for Star Trek was so intense that he even customized his doorbell to play the voice of Patrick Stewart, who portrayed Captain Jean-Luc Picard in the series. However, his obsession was overshadowed by the disturbing nature of his online activities, which ultimately led to his downfall and imprisonment. The case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of unchecked online behavior, even among individuals with seemingly harmless hobbies.
