ANDREW MCGAUGHEY FROM POOLE AND TAUNTON STRUCK OFF MEDICAL REGISTER OVER CHILD INDECENT IMAGE CRIMES
In a recent development that has sent shockwaves through the medical community and the general public alike, Dr.Andrew McGaughey, a former medical practitioner now residing in Taunton, has been officially removed from the medical register following serious allegations related to the possession and distribution of indecent images of children.

McGaughey’s misconduct was brought to light during a tribunal held from May 3 to May 5, a period during which the medical authorities deliberated on his case.
This occurred seven months after he had previously appeared in a criminal court in Poole, where he narrowly avoided incarceration.
The 32-year-old doctor, who had been practicing in Poole at the time of the offenses, pleaded guilty to three counts of possessing indecent images of children and one charge of possessing extreme pornography.
These crimes, which involved material depicting children as young as three years old, were committed while he was living in Poole.
During the tribunal proceedings, McGaughey admitted to the allegations, which were directly linked to his earlier criminal conviction and sentencing.
The tribunal’s report described his behavior as “morally unacceptable,” emphasizing that such actions severely undermine the trust placed in medical professionals by both patients and the wider community.
The tribunal explicitly stated that his conduct was a serious breach of professional standards and that erasure from the medical register was the only appropriate response to uphold public confidence.
Further details revealed that McGaughey, who qualified as a doctor from the University of Bristol in 2019, had engaged in online searches and activities involving indecent images.
He was found to have accessed and shared these images in chat rooms via an application, where he shared pictures of children as young as three.
Despite his claims that he did not derive sexual gratification from the images of young children, he admitted that he exchanged images with others online to obtain material that aligned with his sexual preferences, which he specified as involving teenagers aged 15 to 18.
While the tribunal acknowledged that McGaughey expressed genuine remorse and was taking steps to address his behavior, including issuing an apology, the severity of his offenses was deemed incompatible with his continued practice as a medical professional.
The police had become involved after a referral from the National Crime Agency indicated that his address was being used to access indecent images of children.
McGaughey had pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity and was actively engaging with the conditions of his suspended sentence.
It is important to note that these offenses occurred in his private life and did not involve any direct contact with patients or the public.
Nonetheless, the tribunal emphasized that the nature and seriousness of his crimes warranted the removal from the medical register to protect public safety and uphold the integrity of the medical profession.

In addition to the tribunal’s ruling, McGaughey had previously been sentenced in October of the previous year at Poole Magistrates’ Court to a 12-month prison term, suspended for 24 months.
He was also subjected to a sexual harm prevention order and placed on the sex offenders register for a period of ten years.
