NOTTINGHAM MAN JAILED FOR RAPE AND SEXUAL ASSAULT
A woman who was raped in her sleep has expressed feelings of being 'damaged goods' after a Nottingham man named Alec Sulley, 23, of Woodfield Road, was convicted and sentenced for attacking her.He faced two charges of rape and one charge of intending to commit a sexual offence, and was sentenced at Bristol Crown Court to nine years in prison.
The victim read a heartfelt statement to the judge, describing how she felt: "I've tried to move on.
I've even tried to find love.
All I see is the parts of me that are missing, the parts stolen from me.
I feel like 'victim' is written on my forehead and people see me as the damaged goods I believe I am." The victim added that although she initially felt guilt for reporting the assault, she believed telling the truth was the right decision.
She hopes Sulley makes better choices in the future and believes healing is possible.
She also detailed how the abuse impacted her health, including depression, loss of appetite and sleep, and hatred of her body.
She revealed she felt like a 'shell of a person' and had previously self-harmed, with thoughts of ending her life, which were only stopped by intervention from support workers and mental health services.
Prosecutor David Scutt stated that Sulley twice forced himself on the woman in her Bristol home.
One incident occurred when she woke up in 'absolute pain' and was disturbed from further assault attempts.
Bristol Live reports that Sulley was convicted after the trial.
Bristol Crown Court judge Martin Picton condemned Sulley’s actions, saying, "These are terrible offences you committed.
The impact has been appalling and understandably so.
You still don't seem to realize how serious it was."
