ALAN MACDONALD'S HORRIFIC CRIMES IN BANGOR, BELFAST, AND FIFE LEAD TO LIFE SENTENCE

In a case that has shocked the communities across Bangor, Belfast, and Fife, Alan McDonald, a 53-year-old sex offender with a deeply disturbing and violent criminal history, has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of eight years. The sentencing took place at Downpatrick Crown Court, where Judge Stephen Fowler delivered a stern verdict, emphasizing the severity of McDonald's crimes and the danger he poses to society.

Judge Fowler described McDonald as one of the most manipulative, violent, and predatory individuals he has encountered in his judicial career. The defendant faced charges for 26 separate offences committed over a span of six years, from 1996 to 2002. These offences included heinous acts such as rape, buggery, indecent assault, and false imprisonment, all committed against three children and an adult victim.

During the proceedings, McDonald denied all allegations, but the evidence presented was overwhelming. The court heard that during the 1990s, McDonald resided on the Antrim Road in Belfast and also lived in Kilcooley, Bangor. His current address was listed as Orchardgate in Cupar, Fife. The judge justified the lengthy sentence, stating it was essential to safeguard the public from further harm.

One of McDonald's victims was a young girl whom he groomed starting at age 14. He continued to manipulate her, eventually impregnating her at age 15. The abuse culminated in a terrifying incident where he broke into her home and raped her at knifepoint while she was sleeping. The grooming process involved McDonald engaging her in conversations about music and giving her money, which he later exploited to carry out his assaults. The victim recounted that he burned her with cigarettes during the abuse, leaving lasting scars.

Another victim was a woman with whom McDonald was in a relationship, along with her two young daughters, aged five and nine. He sexually abused both girls and threatened to kill the youngest child's father to maintain control. His violence extended beyond sexual abuse; he subjected the mother to extreme domestic violence, including punching, choking, and stabbing her face with a potato peeler.

Judge Fowler expressed concern that McDonald’s history of violent and predatory behavior indicated he was likely to commit further crimes. The court was told that McDonald’s criminal record was extensive and serious, including attacks on former partners, such as an assault with a bottle that left a woman with a permanent facial disfigurement, and threatening a woman with a knife, forcing her to hide in a bathroom. He also assaulted a man in Scotland, inflicting cuts to his throat and eyelids, and was involved in an incident where he choked and strangled his brother, who awoke to find himself under attack.

Following the sentencing, one of McDonald's victims expressed relief and a sense of justice. She stated, “I’m delighted that he’s in jail now, and I’m especially happy that he was given a life sentence. This means that he is not going to get the opportunity to hurt anyone again for a very long time. I’m happy not just for me, but for his other three victims. He sexually abused me and scarred me for life because he burned me with cigarettes. I’m still scared of him, but I know that the sentence means he can’t hurt anyone else.”

Judge Fowler concluded by emphasizing the gravity of McDonald’s crimes and the threat he continues to pose, underscoring the importance of the sentence in protecting the community from further harm.
