MAN JAILED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT
A 49-year-old man has been sentenced to prison after admitting to sexually assaulting a woman in Belfast city centre.Gordon McBrearty received a sentence of 45 months in prison at Laganside Crown Court on Thursday, 18th September.
The sentence includes an initial period of incarceration followed by the remainder on licence.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, 4th June 2023, in the May Street district, where McBrearty assaulted a woman in her 40s.
Court proceedings revealed that McBrearty, currently detained at HM Prison Maghaberry, had followed the woman for some distance after she left a nightclub, as she sought a lift home.
Despite her resistance, he forcibly lifted her and took her to a nearby area where the assault took place.
Multiple witnesses called the police after seeing her visibly upset and crying out for help.
Law enforcement arrived quickly, arresting McBrearty on suspicion of sexual assault.
Police investigations, including the review of CCTV footage, led to McBrearty being formally charged with the offence.
