AFTAB KARIM'S HORRIFIC DIY DOG SURGERY IN HUDDERSFIELD LEADS TO SEVERE PUNISHMENT
In a disturbing case that has shocked animal welfare advocates in Huddersfield, Aftab Karim, born on January 30, 1982, and residing at 3 Albany Drive, Dalton, was convicted in 2022 for attempting to perform makeshift surgery on his pet dog using a non-medical staple gun.The incident highlights the dangers of unqualified individuals attempting to treat serious injuries without proper veterinary care.
Karim’s dog, a Belgian Malinois named Luna, sustained a severe bite wound inflicted by another dog, which prompted him to seek immediate medical attention.
However, due to financial constraints, Karim claimed he could not afford the veterinary fees, which were estimated to be up to £1,200.
Instead of taking Luna to a professional veterinarian, Karim resorted to a dangerous and unapproved method of treatment, using a staple gun purchased online to close what was described as a 'substantial degloving injury' on Luna’s leg.
The RSPCA was alerted to concerns about Luna’s condition after Karim failed to bring her to a scheduled veterinary appointment the following day.
When inspectors arrived at his residence, they found the dog with a large, gaping wound that had been crudely stapled shut.
Graphic images shared by the charity depict Luna’s injury, with 26 staples visibly holding her leg together in a makeshift attempt at repair.
The staple gun used was not designed for medical use, raising serious questions about the safety and appropriateness of the treatment.
During questioning, Karim admitted to the use of the staple gun, which he had purchased online, and acknowledged that he could not afford the proper veterinary care.
The RSPCA intervened and took Luna to a veterinary surgery, where she was examined and provided with emergency treatment.
Veterinary surgeon James Adams explained that a wound of Luna’s size would typically require a full general anaesthetic for proper cleaning and suturing, emphasizing the severity of Karim’s DIY approach.
Following the incident, Luna was given pain relief, anti-inflammatories, and antibiotics to treat her injuries.
The RSPCA’s investigation revealed that Karim’s actions were not only reckless but also caused unnecessary suffering to the animal.
Both Luna and another dog in Karim’s care were removed from his home to ensure their safety.
Karim later admitted that his actions were a 'ludicrous act' and pleaded guilty to a charge of causing unnecessary suffering by failing to follow veterinary advice.
The court sentenced him to 200 hours of unpaid work, ordered him to pay £445 in costs and surcharge, and imposed a ban on keeping animals for seven years.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of seeking professional veterinary assistance and the dangers of attempting DIY treatments on animals in distress.
