UK-BOUND OFFENDER FIGHTS EXTRADITION OVER PRISON CELL FEARS
An Afghan man named Abdul Ahmadzai, aged 36, who had previously fled to the UK after being convicted of raping a 14-year-old girl in France, is now fighting extradition.
According to reports, Ahmadzai was convicted in absentia for the sexual assault, and was sentenced to five years in prison, with the possibility of retrial if extradited.
He appeared at Westminster Magistrates Court dressed in prison clothes, accompanied by an Afghan interpreter.
His defense argued that there is a 'real risk' of him being detained in a prison space smaller than three meters squared in Paris, citing expert reports about prison conditions.
The court heard claims that some Paris prisons have poor conditions, including issues with electrics, but the government argued that there is a 'high threshold' for Article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights, indicating no danger of inhumane treatment.
The judge has adjourned the decision on Ahmadzai's extradition until October 10, with him remaining in custody in the meantime.
