WILLIAM DRURY'S SHOCKING CRIME IN HALIFAX: TEACHER GROOMS TEENAGERS AND ENCOURAGES SEX IN HIS CAR

In November 2011, William Drury, a teacher based in Halifax, was sentenced to a three-year prison term after a disturbing series of offenses involving two teenagers. The court heard how Drury, a married father of two, engaged in grooming behaviors and encouraged sexual activity between himself and the minors.

According to court proceedings, Drury drove the 17-year-old boy and 16-year-old girl from his residence in Halifax, West Yorkshire. During the journey, he made inappropriate comments, telling the teenagers they looked "beautiful". The situation escalated when Drury stopped his vehicle in a lay-by, allowing the teenagers to continue engaging in sexual acts in the back of his car. During this encounter, he also expressed his feelings for the girl, telling her that he "loved her".

William Drury was found guilty of 12 counts of sexual offenses by Leeds Crown Court. The court also ordered him to register as a sex offender. Evidence presented during the trial revealed that Drury had taken explicit photographs of the girl, including images of her topless. It was also disclosed that he was infatuated with her. The investigation uncovered further disturbing material when police examined his computer, discovering images of other female students, including a 15-year-old girl in her underwear.

During the trial, Drury attempted to justify his actions by claiming that he viewed the boy as a "friend" and that they had discussed sexual matters openly. However, prosecutors emphasized that Drury had systematically groomed the teenagers, exploiting his position of trust as their teacher to manipulate and encourage them into sexual activity.

Judge James Spencer QC delivered a stern verdict, condemning Drury for abusing his role as an educator for personal gain. The judge stated, "You eroded those boundaries, you took advantage of their respect for you, and what you did was you assaulted the girl. You were familiar with other girls and you encouraged them to behave in ways they weren’t ready for. It’s that breach of trust that makes your case so serious."

William Drury was convicted on multiple counts, including causing a child to engage in sexual activity by a person in a position of trust, engaging in sexual activity by a person in a position of trust, inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, and making indecent images of a child. As part of his sentence, he was also disqualified from working with children in the future, reflecting the severity of his misconduct.
