WILLIAM CASSIDY FROM ELM WISBECH JAILED FOR SKIPPING APPOINTMENTS AND GOING ABROAD

In March 2021, a man from Elm, Wisbech, identified as William Cassidy, was sentenced to prison after a series of failures to comply with legal obligations related to his status as a convicted sex offender. Cassidy, aged 31, had been placed on the Sex Offenders Register in December 2018 following a conviction for sexual assault. Despite the legal requirement to regularly update authorities and attend scheduled appointments, Cassidy failed to adhere to these obligations, leading to his eventual imprisonment.

On December 19, 2018, Cassidy was supposed to attend his initial notification appointment, a mandatory step for registered sex offenders to ensure ongoing monitoring and compliance. However, he did not show up for this crucial meeting. The police made efforts to contact him on January 14, 2019, to address the missed appointment. During this communication, Cassidy claimed he was unaware of the necessity to attend and assured officers he would visit Thorpe Wood Police Station the following day to fulfill his obligation. Unfortunately, he did not keep this promise either.

Subsequently, police officers attempted to follow up, but Cassidy again failed to attend. He later contacted the authorities, explaining that he was busy and unable to make the appointment. Law enforcement officials explained that such excuses were unacceptable and emphasized the importance of compliance. It was then revealed that Cassidy was abroad at the time, which further complicated his legal responsibilities. Despite being advised to return to the UK and attend his appointments, Cassidy did not do so.

William Cassidy, who resides on Kirkhams Lane in Elm, Wisbech, ultimately pleaded guilty in court to failing to comply with his notification requirements. His failure to adhere to the legal obligations led to a sentence of eight months in prison, handed down at Peterborough Crown Court on Monday, March 1. Additionally, Cassidy received a further three-month sentence for breaching an order previously issued to him during a case in Stevenage.
