FORMER UNIVERSITY OF YORK STUDENT JAILED FOR THREE YEARS AFTER SEXUAL ASSAULT ON WOMAN
A former University of York student has been jailed for three and a half years after pleading guilty to one count of sexual assault.
Wade Makey, who studied at the University of York and was living in the city at the time of the incident in 2024, appeared for sentencing on January 15th.
The assault left the victim suffering with depression and feeling 'very distressed.' In a victim impact statement, she said she was 'distraught,' 'scared to leave her house,' and had no motivation afterward.
During the sentencing at York Crown Court, Judge Simon Hickey stated that although Makey has neurological disorders on the autistic spectrum and ADHD, they did not mitigate or reduce his culpability because he was aware that his actions were wrong.
Makey received a three-and-a-half-year sentence but will serve less than half behind bars before being released on licence, and he was ordered to sign the sex-offenders register for life.
