HOMELESS MAN FINED FOR NEGLECTING PET RABBIT IN DARKNESS
Valdes Trinity, 53, kept the pet rabbit, called Catherine of Troy, in a cupboard at a homeless hostel where he was staying last year.
He was charged under animal welfare laws with failing to meet the pet's basic needs by keeping it in a cupboard with no light, exposing it to hazardous materials including plastic bags, and not providing adequate food and water.
The rabbit was found in unfit living conditions with faeces on the floor and suffering potential gut failure.
Trinity was fined £260 for failing to properly care for the animal after pleading guilty.
The SSPCA described the living conditions as filthy and unsuitable, and the rabbit was taken into care and rehomed.
Trinity's lawyer stated that the neglect was due to ignorance or carelessness, and that the rabbit was his only companion, with the loss having a significant impact on him.
