COLIN MCKENNA TRACKED EX-WIFE USING AIRTAG ATTACHED TO HER CAR
A CREEPY ex-husband was caught tracking his former partner’s movements – after his victim’s son discovered a device attached to her car.Colin McKenna pleaded guilty at Ayr Sheriff Court to attaching the Apple AirTag tracking device to a vehicle registered to his ex-wife.
The court heard that McKenna, previously of Limekiln Road in Stevenston and now of Galt Avenue, Irvine, was rumbled after his ex-wife received a notification on her phone when she arrived at Crofthead Holiday Park near Ayr on January 20 this year.
Suspecting her movements were being tracked, she contacted the police – and though they were unable to find any tracking device, the woman’s son located it later that day.
McKenna, who turns 66 today, pleaded guilty to a charge of behaving in a threatening or abusive manner – an offence aggravated because it involved the abuse of a partner or former partner.
The court was told that McKenna and his victim had been in a relationship since 2005 and had married in January 2021 before separating in 2024; they had no children together.
When they separated, she remained at her address in Troon, and he left, with a spare key to her motor vehicle.
On January 20 this year the complainer was travelling, and when she arrived at a caravan at Crofthead Holiday Park she received a notification on her phone.
The witness was alarmed as she didn't own an AirTag.
She advised her son, who used a tracking device and searched the vehicle and the caravan for an AirTag.
On January 21, the complainer was looking at her phone and it showed her movements the previous day.
The police attended and noted the complainer was very upset.
They searched the vehicle with a negative result.
The complainer's son attended later on the same date, and found an AirTag wrapped in black tape below the spare wheel of the complainer’s motor vehicle.
The serial number of the AirTag had the last digits matching the accused's phone.
The accused was traced, cautioned, and charged, and made no reply.
Sheriff Mhari MacTaggart deferred sentencing for criminal justice social work reports.
McKenna’s bail was continued; he will return to court at a later date.
