UMAR IQBAL SEXUALLY ASSAULTS TEENAGE GIRL IN ROCHDALE AND IS JAILED
In a disturbing incident that took place in Rochdale, a 16-year-old girl was followed and subjected to a sexual assault by Umar Iqbal, a man who has now been convicted and sentenced for his actions.On the afternoon of Friday, March 5, 2017, at approximately 3:30 pm, the young girl was walking along Yorkshire Street in Rochdale when she encountered Iqbal.
According to reports, Iqbal approached her with the apparent intention of initiating a conversation.
However, the girl, feeling uncomfortable and wary of his approach, decided to walk away from him.
Despite her attempt to distance herself, Iqbal persisted by following her onto Princess Street.
It was during this pursuit that Iqbal made a direct comment, expressing his admiration for her and inquiring whether she had a boyfriend.
His words and actions quickly escalated as he took hold of her hand, despite her protests and telling him to let go.
Ignoring her resistance, Iqbal then pulled her towards a nearby garage area, attempting to kiss her.
The girl firmly refused, pulling away from him, but Iqbal's actions did not cease.
He proceeded to sexually assault her in that secluded spot.
Following the assault, Iqbal pressured the victim into providing him with her phone number, which she reluctantly did in the hope that he would leave her alone.
Later that night, Iqbal called her, speaking with her for about a minute before the call ended.
The girl reported the incident to the police the following day, providing authorities with the necessary details to trace and arrest Iqbal.
Umar Iqbal, born on June 24, 1991, and residing on Ipswich Street in Rochdale, pleaded guilty to the charge of sexual assault during an earlier hearing.
His case was brought before Manchester Crown Court at Minshull Street, where he was sentenced on Thursday, May 4, 2017.
The court handed down a sentence of three years in prison, ordered him to sign the sex offender register for life, and imposed an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order to prevent any future offenses.
This case highlights the importance of vigilance and swift police action in protecting vulnerable individuals from predatory behavior in communities like Rochdale.
