UBAID RAHMAN FROM SCUNTHORPE SENTENCED TO FIVE YEARS FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT ON YOUNG GIRL IN LOCAL MOSQUE

In March 2019, a tragic case unfolded involving Ubaid Rahman, a young man from Scunthorpe, who was convicted of serious sexual offenses against a young girl. Rahman, aged 22 at the time, was a trusted figure within the local Islamic community, having trained to become an imam and being regarded as a devout and deeply religious individual by those around him.

The incident came to light after the girl’s family discovered that Rahman had engaged in inappropriate conduct towards their daughter. The court heard that Rahman had deliberately exploited the trust placed in him by the family, which was shattered when the truth emerged. The young girl was subjected to inappropriate touching by Rahman in a private setting, specifically inside a toilet where he pretended to play a game and asked her to stand on the toilet seat. Additionally, he touched her while she was playing on a swing, further violating her innocence and trust.

During the trial at Grimsby Crown Court, Rahman denied the charges of sexual assault and assault by penetration. However, the jury found him guilty after a thorough trial process. The presiding judge, Recorder Richard Woolfall, expressed his condemnation of Rahman’s actions, emphasizing the betrayal of trust involved. He stated, “You were trusted by the family,” and added, “You abused that trust to abuse their daughter. They had no idea what was going on.”

Recorder Woolfall highlighted that Rahman had told “significant lies” during the proceedings in an attempt to conceal his misconduct. Despite this, the judge acknowledged that Rahman appeared to feel remorseful and regretful for his actions, though this did not mitigate the severity of his crimes.

As part of his sentence, Rahman was handed a five-year prison term. The court also imposed a lifelong sexual harm prevention order, requiring him to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life. Furthermore, upon his eventual release from prison, Rahman will be subject to an extended licence period of one year, ensuring ongoing supervision and monitoring of his conduct.

This case underscores the importance of safeguarding vulnerable individuals and highlights the devastating impact of betrayal by trusted community figures. Rahman’s actions have left a lasting scar on the young girl and her family, and the justice system’s response aims to prevent such incidents from recurring in the future.
