2014.
A mixed martial arts fighter who assaulted his pregnant ex-girlfriend by stabbing her five times in the abdomen has received a prison sentence of 19 years.
Nicholas Leaning, aged 28 and from Torbay Court in Scunthorpe, was found guilty of intentionally wounding her and attempting to end the life of her unborn child.
He was acquitted by a jury at Hull Crown Court of charges of attempted murder.
The incident occurred in Belton, North Lincolnshire, on June 11, when Lauren Oliver was seven months pregnant.
She was rushed into emergency surgery and delivered her baby via Caesarean section.
Humberside Police confirmed that the newborn was unharmed.
Leaning received a 19-year sentence for the woundings and an additional 10-year term for the attempt to destroy the unborn child's life, with both sentences to be served simultaneously.
During sentencing, Judge Jeremy Richardson QC described the case as highly serious.
He stated, "You intended to kill that child, and it is fortunate that your plan did not succeed.
This was a truly malicious act." The court was informed that Leaning, a professional in the sport of cage fighting, attacked Ms.
Oliver after their relationship ended and she refused to terminate the pregnancy.
Judge Richardson remarked that Leaning had shown no remorse and had provided a false account in court, claiming Ms.
Oliver had stabbed herself as an act of revenge for his previous relationship choices.
He dismissed these claims as completely false and cruel.
