TONY JOHAL AND KAMALJIT KAUR JOHAL FROM HANDSWORTH SENTENCED FOR CRUELTY TO DOG CYRUS

In a case that has shocked the local community of Handsworth, Birmingham, Tony Johal and his mother, Kamaljit Kaur Johal, faced justice for their neglect and mistreatment of a defenseless dog named Cyrus.

The incident came to light after animal welfare officers from Birmingham City Council responded to a distress call on July 20, 2018, concerning the welfare of a dog at the Woodland Road residence, where the Johal family resides.

Upon arrival, officers discovered Cyrus in a deplorable state.

The dog was confined within a dilapidated wooden kennel, which was surrounded by bare earth, indicating a lack of proper shelter.

Cyrus was visibly emaciated, suffering from a severe and widespread skin infection that caused open sores and cracked skin, which bled when he moved.

The dog was also covered in flies, a clear sign of neglect and poor hygiene.

The officers noted that the condition of Cyrus was 'horrific,' and it was evident that he had been enduring significant suffering.

During the investigation, Kamaljit Kaur Johal, who was responsible for Cyrus at the time, insisted that there was nothing wrong with the dog apart from his age.

She claimed that Cyrus was fine, dismissing concerns raised by the officers.

Meanwhile, the dog's owner, identified as Tony Johal, was contacted by the officers over the phone.

Tony confirmed that he was the owner and lived at the same address as his mother.

The officers quickly took action to remove Cyrus from the premises to ensure his immediate veterinary care.

Veterinary examination revealed that Cyrus was in such a dire condition that euthanasia was deemed the most humane option.

The vet confirmed that the dog had been subjected to unnecessary suffering, which led to the heartbreaking decision to put him to sleep.

The case highlighted the severity of neglect and the failure of the owners to provide basic care for their pet.

In the subsequent court proceedings, both Tony Johal and Kamaljit Kaur Johal faced legal consequences for their actions.

Tony Johal received an 18-week prison sentence, which was suspended for two years, along with a fine of £615.

His mother, Kamaljit Kaur Johal, was fined £404.

Additionally, both individuals were banned from owning or keeping any animals for a period of ten years, a ban that was imposed without the possibility of appeal.

The case has served as a stark reminder of the importance of animal welfare and the legal responsibilities of pet owners in Birmingham and beyond.
