REUEL JONES FROM HANDSWORTH SENTENCED FOR VIOLENT ATTACK ON EX-GIRLFRIEND AND NEW MOTHER IN HER HOME

Reuel Jones, a man from Handsworth, has been convicted and sentenced to prison following a brutal assault on his former partner, who was also a new mother, inside her own residence. The incident, which took place on April 15th of the previous year, shocked the local community and highlighted concerns about domestic violence and the dangers faced by women in abusive relationships.

According to court proceedings, Jones’s attack occurred while his ex-girlfriend was holding her newborn baby. The relationship had ended after two years of being together, but Jones’s anger and frustration did not subside. Despite being asked to leave her flat, he refused to do so, remaining inside the property and escalating the situation. The court was told that Jones’s temper flared when he felt that his feelings were not being acknowledged or treated with enough sympathy, especially after a disagreement with his mother.

During the assault, Jones physically attacked his ex-partner, striking her on the head with a wireless games controller. He then proceeded to physically restrain her by placing his hands over her face and around her throat, effectively restricting her breathing. The woman attempted to escape the violence, even trying to exit through a window, but Jones prevented her from doing so. In a further attempt to control her, he grabbed her phone in an effort to stop her from calling the police for help.

As the assault continued, Jones placed his hands over her nose and mouth and around her neck once more, all while she was cradling her infant. This violent act caused her to fall to the floor. Throughout the ordeal, he slapped her and squeezed her neck again, demonstrating a pattern of threatening and violent behavior. Despite her efforts to escape, Jones’s actions left her feeling terrified and physically harmed. Eventually, she managed to flee the flat and seek safety.

The court heard that Jones’s behavior was out of character, with his solicitor acknowledging that his actions appeared to be a moment of loss of control. However, the court also noted his previous criminal record, which includes dangerous driving, possession of Class A drugs with intent to supply, and failing to surrender to authorities. Notably, he also has a history of violent conduct, including an incident in July involving the assault of an emergency worker.

Judge Rhona Campbell sentenced Jones to 20 months in prison and imposed a five-year restraining order to prevent any contact with his victim. The woman, overwhelmed by fear, has since moved in with relatives and is currently awaiting rehousing from the local council, feeling too unsafe to return to her home. The judge emphasized that Jones remained in denial about his behavior, which raised concerns about his attitude towards his actions and the potential for future violence.
