MAN JAILED FOR SEXUALLY ABUSING CHILD
A resident of East Timor who sexually abused and groomed a child in Winsford has received a prison sentence.
Tomas Sarmento appeared before Liverpool Crown Court on Friday, 13 March, and was sentenced to a term of 17 years imprisonment.
The 43-year-old, residing in the Winsford area, was convicted of raping a girl under the age of 13 and encouraging a girl under 13 to take part in sexual activity.
His conviction followed an eight-day trial that concluded on Wednesday, 21 January, at Liverpool Crown Court.
Throughout the trial, the court was informed that Sarmento had engaged in grooming and sexually abusing the victim from 2022 to 2023, with the abuse beginning when she was only eight years old.
It was revealed that Sarmento lured the girl to his home on the false promise of providing Wi-Fi access.
Once inside, he exploited her sexually.
The victim later summoned the courage to confide in a friend about the incidents, which led to police being informed.
An investigation was initiated, and Sarmento was questioned regarding the allegations.
During the police interview, he denied any wrongdoing.
Nonetheless, he was charged with the offences and subsequently sentenced to a significant prison term for his actions.
