SALTCOATS MAN JAILED FOR 'PREDATORY ATTACK' ON WOMAN
A sex predator who raped a woman in a Saltcoats flat while his wife lay ill has been sentenced to five years in prison.
The incident occurred at a property on Parkend Road on July 11, 2019.
Thomas West, aged 55, was convicted by a jury late last year after denying the rape charge.
During the sentencing, Judge David Young QC noted that West and the woman had sat in the living room, with West's wife also present but largely confined to bed due to illness.
West took advantage of his sleeping victim, and later committed a 'predatory attack' on another woman who was 'unable to give consent.' The court heard that the woman did not know what had happened to her, and West denied any assault when she asked.
This offence was deemed a grave sexual offence, warranting custody.
West had prior convictions for assault and robbery, and it was also reported that his wife has since passed away.
